Weights and Measures

Some of the old-time remedies listed here refer to weights and measures which are no longer in regular use. These tables should give you some idea of their equivalents. (Pints, gallons etc. are UK, not US, measures.)








Solid Measures
20 grainsare contained in1 scruple
3 scruples1 drachm
8 drachms1 ounce (troy)
12 ounces1 pound (troy)








Liquid Measures
60 minimsare contained in1 fluid drachm
8 fluid drachms1 fluid ounce
20 fluid ounces1 pint
8 pints1 gallon











Approximations
A tumblerusually contains about10 ounces
A teacup6 ounces
A wineglass2 ounces
2 tablespoons1 ounce
A tablespoon4 drachms
