For the Tooth-ache

August 5th, 2021

Each of the following remedies have been known to alleviate suffering. Turn up a wine-glass, put a little powdered alum on the round part, rub it to a paste with sweet spirits of nitre, and apply it directly to the cavity of the tooth, if there be one, if not, on the gum round it. Repeat this often.

Or: mix 2 drachms of alum, in impalpable powder, and 2 drachms of nitrous spirits of ether.

Or: 2 drachms of alum powdered very fine, with 7 drachms of nitrous spirits of ether.

Or: a drop of ether and of laudanum on cotton: this will also relieve the ear-ache.

Or: 1 oz. tincture of myrrh, 1 oz. tincture of gumlac, 1/2 oz. tincture of bark: mix the two last, shake well, add the myrrh by degrees, and shake well together. 1 table-spoonful to 2 of hot water; wash the mouth frequently, holding it in for some time.

Toothache

Apply chloroform to the nerve of the tooth, by means of a quill tooth pick. Chloroform is so volatile that when introduced through cotton it seldom reaches the nerve.

An Excellent Deodorizer

September 18th, 2020

To purify sick rooms of any foul smells, put one tablespoonful of bromo chloralum to eight of soft water; dip cloths in and hang up to evaporate.

The surface of anything may be purified by washing well and then rubbing with a weakened solution of bromo chloralum.

This will also purify the breath which is offensive from teeth, by inserting a solution of bromo chloralum upon cotton in the tooth, and rinsing the mouth with a weaker solution three or four times a day.

Toothache

May 16th, 2020

Touch a piece of cotton which you are to apply to the nerve of your tooth, to a cork on which is poured a drop of carbolic acid; insert in the cavity of the tooth. A sure and immediate cure of toothache. If the first application is not effective apply again. Be careful not to let the carbolic acid touch the lips or tongue, as it will burn them.

For Children Teething

April 16th, 2020

Tie a quarter of a pound of wheat flour in a thick cloth, and boil it in one quart of water for three hours; then remove the cloth and expose the flour to the air or heat until it is hard and dry; grate from it, when wanted, one tablespoonful, which put into half a pint of new milk, and stir over the fire until it comes to a boil, when add a pinch of salt and a tablespoonful of cold water, and serve. This gruel is excellent for children afflicted with summer complaint. Or, brown a tablespoonful of flour in the oven or on top of the stove on a baking-tin; feed a few pinches at a time to a child, and it will often check a diarrhoea. The tincture of “kino” — of which from ten to thirty drops, mixed with a little sugar and water in a spoon, and given every two or three hours, is very efficacious and harmless — can be procured at almost any druggist’s. Tablespoon doses of pure cider vinegar, and a pinch of salt, has cured when all else failed.

For Tooth-Ache

December 5th, 2019

Take a piece of soft muslin or lawn, about two inches long and one and a quarter inches wide, lay a little dry powdered ginger in the centre and fold over the sides and ends and sew it in place. Put this between the cheek and gum, and it will almost invariably ease the pain. These can be made larger or smaller, and will stay in place night or day.

Grate a tablespoonful for a cupful of boiling milk and water (half and half). Wet up the flour with a very little cold water, stir in and boil five minutes. Put in a little salt.
