For Croup

Wring cloths out of hot water, as hot as possible, and put around the throat and cover well. Change two or three times. If this does not relieve, give an emetic. If the child is suffering with a severe attack, give the emetic at once; apply hot water to the throat and rub the chest with sweet oil or lard, and soak the feet in hot water and cover well with woolen, when taken out of the water.

Cure for Rheumatism

One-quarter small teaspoonful Canadian balsam. Take three times a day after meals, a little water taken afterwards, and also rub the affected part twice a day with coal oil until a warm glow is felt.

The Best Cough Syrup

One ounce of hoarhound leaves and blossoms, one ounce each of spikenard root, camfrey root, sunflower seed and elecampane. Put all in water, and boil one hour in water enough to have a quart remaining after it has boiled, and has been strained. To this add one pound of loaf sugar, boll it again for a little while and add a little brandy, and bottle it. Dose: a tablespoonful three times a day. Has been thoroughly tested.

Cholera and Diarrhoea

For this recipe the New York Sun newspaper paid one thousand dollars for the benefit of subscribers. It is most effectual but is not adopted for young children. Equal parts of tincture of rhubarb, cayenne, opium, ginger, spirits of camphor and essence of peppermint. Dose, half a teaspoonful every three hours.

A Cure for Dropsy

Six lemons, one pound of loaf sugar, one ounce of cream of tartar, one ounce of magnesia, two ounces of parsley seed. Slice the lemons thin, put them and the parsley seed into three quarts of water, boil down to one quart, strain and add the other things to them. Dose, a wine glass three times a day.

Alum Whey

Mix half an ounce of pounded alum with one pint of milk. Strain it, and add sugar and nutmeg to the whey. It is good in cases of hemorrhages, and sometimes for colic.

Lip Salve

Melt one ounce white wax, one ounce sweet oil, one drachm spermaceti, and throw in a piece of alkanet root to color it, and, when cooling, perfume it with oil rose, and then pour it into small white jars or boxes.

Cholera Medicine

Tincture of opium, spirits of camphor, tincture capsicum, each one fluid ounce; purified chloroform three fluid drachms, and sufficient stronger alcohol to make five fluid ounces. Each fluid drachm or teaspoonful contains about one hundred drops, being about twenty of each ingredient. Dose for adults, one teaspoonful.

Cure for Neuralgia

Tea from the leaves of the common thistle boiled down and made quite strong, is said to be an excellent remedy for neuralgia. The leaves should also be macerated and used on the parts affected as a poultice. Said to be a permanent and sure cure.
