Brown Mixture for a Cough

Take of paregoric, liquorice and gum arabic, each an ounce, from fifty to one hundred drops of antimonial wine and two gills of hot water; mix them well together, and when cold, bottle, and cork it tight; take two tea-spoonsful at a time; if it should nauseate, give a smaller quantity. If this produce profuse perspiration avoid going in the air unless well wrapped up. This has been useful in the latter stages of the whooping cough.

Cough Mixture (The Late Sir William Gull’s)

4 ozs. honey
4 ozs. cod liver oil
The juice of 2 or 3 lemons, according to size

To mix the above put altogether into a jar and either stand it on the stove or in a saucepan of boiling water until it is well dissolved. Stir the ingredients occasionally.

A dessertspoonful to be taken three times a day, or double the quantity if the patient likes. Should the stomach reject the cod liver oil, sweet olive oil may be substituted, but the other is the best.

Cough Mixture

1 oz syrup of squills, 1d paragoric, 1d laudanum, 1d oil of peppermint, 1d white wine vinegar; dissolve 1lb treacle in one gill hot water, when cold mix all together. Dose: for children 1 teaspoonful three times a day; for adults, one tablespoonful three times a day.

Pour 1 pint vinegar over 1 dozen egg shells, let it stand 24 hours, 1 pound brown sugar, 1/2 pound rock candy, 1 pound honey, pour 2 gills rum over candy, sugar and honey, 1 tablespoon glycerine. Beat whites of 1 dozen eggs and mix all together and strain. Bottle and take 1 dessert spoon three or four times a day.

5 oz treacle
6 oz honey
18 tablespoonfuls of vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoonfuls ipecacuanha wine

Put the vinegar, treacle and honey into a jar, and stand it in a saucepan of boiling water; stir until dissolved. Add the wine and bottle the mixture, keeping it well corked.

Dose: One dessertspoonful every three or four hours.

For Colds on the Chest

Rub with embrocation, or camphorated oil, on the throat and chest, afterwards covering them with flannel or Thermogen. Give a cough mixture to relieve the cough. A linseed poultice will become necessary for a case of bronchitis, croup, pneumonia or pleurisy.

Cough Mixture

Take buttonwood root and make a strong tea of it; to a pint of the tea and a pint of honey, a piece of saltpetre about the size of your thumb; mix all together and boil down to one pint; also add one tablespoon of paregoric.
